In line with the national campaign to Save Our Local Services, support Bristol libraries and workers by signing the CILIP petition, attending the Lobby Day on 9th Feb and, visiting your local library on National Libraries Day 6 February 2016.
Our public library service has been under sustained attack since 2010. Over 100 council run libraries were closed last year alone and there has been a 14% drop in the total number of libraries since 2010. The number of paid staff in libraries also continues to decline as the number of volunteers increases. The Government has done nothing to prevent the attack on our library service and continues to pass huge budget cuts onto already cash strapped councils.
Join our lobby of Parliament
As part of the Speak Up For Libraries coalition, UNISON is holding a lobby of Parliament on Tuesday 9 February 2016. The lobby gives campaigners, local user groups and library staff the opportunity to meet with their Member of Parliament to tell them that library services are too important to damage through cuts and closures – both now and for future generations. The lobby will begin at 11am with a rally at the Methodist Central Hall Westminster, including key speakers and entertainment.
Please try and attend this lobby, particularly if you work in libraries. This is to ensure that the unique view of the workforce is represented on the day and you the members’ voices heard.
Travel arrangements : There is a travel budget which would cover up to 10 members going by national express coach if they book shortly. Members who use this budget should take the banner and be prepared to report to branch committee on the event. Please contact the branch ASAP if you are looking to travel to this event.
Anyone who is attending can register for free at the link below in order to help us keep track of the number of people who are coming.
More information about the schedule for the day and lobbying information will be made available on the Speak Up For Libraries website in the coming days and weeks and on twitter via #SUFLlobby16
